Mock Exam (How to Improve)

Target Grade: C
Mock Exam Result: B

Audience question (2a and 2b):

2a) To improve on my 2a answer, I need to write more to get more marks. I only gave two examples of who the audiences were (women and British people), so to gain more marks I could give another example of the audience.
2b) To improve on my 2b response, I need to use more technical terms. I also need to provide a wider range of examples, as two of the four examples I gave were about gender.

Representation question (3a):

To improve my response and gain more marks, I should have used more examples, and made sure some were positive, as a lot of the ones I used portrayed the genders negatively. If I gave positive examples as well as negative ones I would have more to talk about, thus I would gain more marks.
I needed to use more technical language as well, such as 'construction', and I needed to explore the examples in more detail.

Revision and Study:

Revision and study has a great impact on the results I gain in my exams, so I need to spend more time revising and learning technical terms. I did around 30mins - 1h worth of revision and although I came out with a B, if I did more revision, I could do a lot better! I also need to keep up with the news and the media itself, so I always have examples to use in the questions that require them.

Coursework:

I have finished all of my pre-production and production, I just need to complete my report to a good standard. There isn't much left to do, so I will be finished in no time!

Audience Task:

-With reference to your own detailed examples, explore how media texts target different audiences. (20)
-Find specific examples of media text and how they target different audiences.

Examples used:
~ Snog Marry Avoid? (TV Programme) : Aimed at women
~ Looking for Eric (Film) : Aimed at men
~ Girl Talk (Magazine) : Aimed at girls aged 4-11
~ Expensive car billboards (Advertising) : Aimed at upper class people

What I should have done:
Suggested more audiences for each example, e.g.:

Snog Marry Avoid?

  • Females; it is about make-up and has a female presenter - women can relate,
  • 14 - 30; it is about young women so again women can relate, also this is the typical age where females are interested in appearance,
  • Working Class; it is based around cheap/tacky women usually, so I doubt that upper class people would be amused
  • British; it is about British women so again they can relate, they also visit different parts of Britain which may interest British people,
  • Heterosexual; women will compare themselves to the other women, rather than be attracted to them.

Looking for Eric:

  • Men; it is about football which is stereotypically a mans interest, about a famous male so they may be able to relate
  • 25 - 50; typical ages men are interested in football, also the right age to know who Eric Cantona is. Younger people probably wouldn't remember him and therefore wouldn't be interested,
  • British/French; Eric Cantona is a French footballer who played for Manchester United, therefore both French and British people would be interested,
  • Football fans; it is about a footballer

Girl Talk:

  • Girls; a lot of pink used, features typical girly things on cover (e.g horses, boy bands, make up, flowers)
  • 4 - 11; a lot of boy bands that are aimed at young girls, things that interest them are featured on the front cover
  • From working class family; upper class parents would buy more intellectually stimulating magazines such as art books etc, rather than younger versions of 'Hello' and 'OK'
  • British; British children are a lot different to children of other nationalities, so these magazines are obviously aimed at British kids.

Expensive car billboard:

  • 30 - 50; this is the age where people begin earning a lot of money usually, so this is when they can afford to buy expensive cars. 30-50 year olds are generally sensible and would buy an expensive car to keep rather than a cheap one which could break,
  • Upper Class; they can afford expensive cars, lower class people wouldn't be interested,
  • Top of Socio-Economic Scale; earns a lot of money so would me able to afford it (same as above mainly)
